Guangdong and Hainan Tilapia Price Jumps Twice Recently As Market Supply Falls Short of Demand

Recently, tilapia price rises remarkably in Chinese domestic market. According to China Tilapia Price Index, it has rised from 95.16 in mid-July to 102.04 at present, 6.88 points up in such short period. And the up-trend still keeps strong. In Hainan province, one of China main tilapia origin of places, the price also goes up, which jumps twice during the same period, from 3.9 yuan/500g (debt price, 500-800g size) to 4.1 yuan/500g and then to present 4.3 yuan/500g (cash price 4.4 yuan/500g);Actually, it's quite the same situation in Guangdong province.

The main reason for the price rising is that the tilapia supply can’t meet the demand,another reason is Heavy rain and typhoons are an annual disruption to the aquaculture fishery . Although the price goes up and the fish available on market also increases, most of the farmers still hold an wait-and-see attitude towards the market, looking forward the price to rise 0.1-0.2 yuan/500g more. As a result, the overall tilapia supply is still low. Meanwhile, some processing factories begin to prepare for the orders to be placed by the end of this year. Their raw fish procurement also increases. According to local industry insiders, some of the factories purchase the fish in a quantity near to the daily-needed processing amount.

Industry insiders believe that besides the reason that farmers are reluctant to sell fish at present, the put-off fry stocking in origin places this year, which causes 30-40% less of available big size fish and only 20% stock of 500g above size fish at present, also contributes to the short supply of fish on market.
